Approaching dark storm clouds evoke hope and anticipation in a dry outback that has
endured years of drought. This dramatic scene records a moment in 2003 when these
clouds formed on the horizon and I was certain the 3 years of drought was about to break.
The sun beaming behind me illuminated the red road as it deepened the blue/grey/purple
clouds and highlighted the light on the top of the clouds and Gidgee trees. It was a sight to
behold and later I eagerly painted the scene in pastel.
Unfortunately, the clouds slipped away to the south and it didn’t rain. It was another 4
years before the millennium drought broke.
